This war book was both more and less than what I expected. I anticipated reading a memoir of combat experiences flying Spitfires in the Battle of Britain. It is that, in part, but that was not the writer's chief aim. Rather, he seems to have set out to explain how an admitted non-political, self-absorbed college student found commitment and compassion for his fellow man through experiences that included downing 5 enemy planes in the Battle of Britain and extended hospitalization. It was also more that I expected, in that the flying scenes he does describe, are among the best I have ever read. On the whole, The Last Enemy fleshes out the times and the people, particularly those on track to become leaders, but instead found themselves on the front lines of a war they did not want. I suggest that before reading, you look up the author online. The references to his life will put this book in a clearer perspective.Product details

Not overly excited about it. I was expecting more information on his flying in combat but the bulk of the book was devoted to his recovery from a very serious burn and his many operations. While I admire his contribution to victory in WW II the story was not what I was expecting.
If a reader is interested in burn recovery and rehab I'm sure that reader's rating would be much higher. The book is a good read, it's just not a great read as far as my tastes are concerned.
I very much liked the humility of the author who suffered grievous wounds in the war and yet remained human. I would recommend this book to anyone with a strong stomach for the realities of war and the the pain it entails to it's victims. Richard Hillary is a very astute survivor of war and is a very capable author. The reality of his wartime experiences is vividly expressed in this book. I enjoyed the book immensely.
This book will stay with me for a long time. It is 'about' an English pilot in World War II, but really it is about how a young man grows from an entitled upper-class twit (as he sees himself; though it's possible that others see him very differently) to a mature human being. It's something I think everyone can relate to, because the things he talks about are a part of everyone. Outwardly I have nothing in common with the author, but I could certainly relate to him. The book is inexpensive, especially on sale; so buy it or get it from your local library. You won't be sorry.
This is more than not a philosophical set of discussions the authors posits with other characters in the book. Some of the book is about flying, but all his arguments / philosophizing about the nature of war, man, life etc felt obvious and somewhat repetitive. He writes pretty well, and the descriptions of what he went through with his injuries is horrifying, but as a story about England and the Battle of Britain it left me uninterested. I rarely do this, but I started skipping towards the end of the book.
The first part of this novel deals with well known college and university students and graduates who signed on to the military during the beginning of England's entry into the conflict. Most tried aviation and upper class educated men were given preference as RAF pilots.
Class envy and class distinction was an everyday part of life in THE UK, whether at war or not.
The second part to this novel is really the most interesting for two reasons the almost indifferent attitude toward loss of fellow pilots and secondly, the pain, suffering and permanent disfigurstion of so many who served their country but also how so many couldn't adjust to the boredom of peace! On day, they're lives are on the line, the next, it's over and one has to return to life without excitement or no life at all.
This book might simply have been of best stories of WW2 ... if it hadn't been for the fact that the author wanted to do something more. The chapter that sticks with me is not simply the first, with the brilliant description of being shot down, but the one where the author helps take care of a bombing casualty.
"Thank you, sir," she said, and took my hand in hers. And then, looking at me again, she said after a pause, "I see they got you too."
Those words got to the author, ina way that the bullets and the fire hadn't. It's a story well worth reading.
This book is well-known to those who follow the story of the Battle of Britain. Hillary (5 kills) was shot down and terribly burned. He was one of the 'Guinea Pigs' who underwent reconstructive plastic surgery, went back to flying and was killed in an accident. He showed great courage in his military career (perhaps too much) and in the process was converted from detached interest in combat to heroism and patriotism. I do wonder about the veracity of some of the events he describes but one cannot deny that he was one brave man. The book led me to finding his Memorial stone on Google Earth, a site which had not been marked. RIP Richard.
